Footloose Pre-Screening at Mazza Gallerie

 Footloose Pre-Screening at Mazza Gallerie

Everybody cutloose? The remake of the popular 80’s movie, Footloose, "dances" into theaters on Friday, October 14th, but I caught a pre-screening at Mazza Galerie in Chevy Chase on Tuesday night. The audience seemed to enjoy the movie especially since some hadn’t seen the original. (gasp)

“The movie was very entertaining. We walked away feeling good,” said Joann Yahya.

When you think Footloose, most people think of dancing king, Kevin Bacon, in a tight white tee and black Chuck Taylors or his maroon colored suit  dancing to the Kenny Loggins hit.

Jason J. Swain: A New Use for Fallen Trees- An Art form

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, most people were surveying the damage to their property and calling their power companys. One Kensington, Maryland artist and chainsaw wood cutter, Jason J. Swain, however was looking forward to the storm for the fallen trees and the growth of his wood cutting business.

"Power outages aside, it's not a bad time for me. I'm a portrait artist, but I started doing chainsaw cutting about five years ago when I'd see large trees fall and wood going to waste after severe storms. Everytime a storm comes by, I go looking for wood," explained artist Jason J. Swain.

Born in Brisbane, Australia, Jason comes from a long family tradition of artists. He has a love for the outdoors, which can be seen in his many animal wood carvings.

"There is so much nice wood in Maryland and instead of throwing it out, I turn it into a nice piece of art work," said Swain.

Two free film events for Labor Day Weekend

Two free film events for Labor Day Weekend

A few months back I told you about local filmmaker Anthony Greene and his short film anthology A World At Work. Anthony has two new events this week, once again bringing culture to the East side of the Anacostia.

The first is Art Behind the Art, an exhibition at Blank Space SE of behind-the-scenes photography from local film sets. There will be an opening reception at the gallery this Friday September 2 at 7PM. The show will run for a week and coincide with Anthony's second event, The East of the River Film Festival.
