Students Read Over 7,000 Books in Mayor's Reading Competition

Throughout March and April, Gaithersburg third graders read over 7,000 books between five different schools as they participated in the Mayor’s 3rd Annual Book Club Reading Competition.

The reading competition, which is held in conjunction with the Gaithersburg Book Festival, an all-day celebration of literary excellence, is a program Mayor Katz started to support literacy, and learning among elementary-level students as well as encouraging students to make reading a daily activity.

Out of the five elementary schools that participated, Fields Road Elementary School won the competition having 85 students read 4,664 books.

The other area schools that took part in the competition included Summit Hall, Strawberry Knoll, Washington Grove, and Diamond Elementary Schools.

Mayor Katz will recognize each student from the winning class with a gold-star membership card and a certificate at the Gaithersburg Book Festival on May 19.
