New Cosmetic Filler Refreshes Tired Eyes

CHEVY CHASE, Md. (WUSA9)-- There is no question that cosmetic procedures have moved further away from drastic lifts and tucks, to injectables and lasers that turn back the clock in a more subtle way.

Botox or Dysport can freeze and smooth out forehead lines.  Fillers like Radiesse, Restylane, and Juvederm can fill in the nasolabial folds and plump up thinning lips. Doctors often use combinations of these injectables to get the desired results, and refinish the skin's surface with lasers or chemical peels.

But many specialists will also tell you that the delicate area under the eyes presents a unique challenge. Some are using a new dermal filler called Belotero, and 47 year-old Stephanie Cantizano is ready to give it a try.

"I would like to look like a super model! Wouldn't we all? I'll take that, but if that doesn't work, maybe you know 37," she jokes.

A life-long swimmer, Cantizano tells Dermatologist Maral Skelsey that years of wearing goggles may have contributed to the skin damage around her eyes, especially the hollows and fine lines underneath.  Dr. Skelsey says Belotero, a filler made of hyaluronic acid, is a no down-time solution, and well-suited for small lines around the eyes and lips.

Dr. Skelsey says, "Belotero is terrific for very fine superficial lines. So in an area like the under eye, where we want to go very superficially, it makes for a very natural look."

Dr. Skelsey numbs the treatment area and strategically injects the filler, in order to avoid bruising as much as possible.  She says, "There are very important anatomic structures in that area and lots of blood vessels. It requires a real knowledge of the anatomy of the area and it takes a very small amount to make a big difference."

A couple weeks later, Stephanie was back in Dr. Skelsey's Chevy Chase office some follow-up photos. You can see them in the attached video.

Dr. Skelsey says the cost of Belotero is pretty much in the range of other fillers, depending on how much volume is needed. She says other fillers are better suited for deeper creases, like the naso-labial folds. The results from Belotero should last about six months.
