Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
People

I recently watched the movie Snow White while babysitting for a friend’s daughter so she could get out.  The last time I had seen the movie was many years ago when I watched it with my kids.  As I have witnessed many times in the past couple of decades, the message of Positive Self Talk was loud and clear.

When the evil queen asked, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?” The mirror’s reply, “Snow White” made the evil Queen furious. You see, it wasn’t enough for the Queen that she was beautiful.  Instead, the Queen chose to see that she wasn’t enough. There was someone more beautiful than she.

The Queen looked outside, for an external decision maker, rather than knowing from within that she was beautiful. She was enough. When our self-esteem is dependent upon someone else, we set ourselves up for disappointment, regret or, perhaps, failure. When we compare ourselves to others, there will always be someone smarter, taller, stronger, or, like the Queen, more beautiful. We cannot win.

It is normal to look at shortcomings … doing so is a part of our humanity. It is important, however, not to let these reflections rule our thinking. Build and fill yourself internally with positive messages. Focus on what you have instead of what you think is missing.  Know that you are enough.  You deserve to be loved, by yourself and others, just the way you are.
