Donations Needed for Children in Smart Sack Program

Donations Needed for Children in Smart Sack Program

Manna Food Center is the main food bank in Montgomery County serving over 175,000 individuals throughout the course of the year.

In 2005, this non-profit partnered with local businesses and organizations to begin a food program combating childhood hunger in elementary schools. Through this program, Manna Food Center provides 1900 students with backpacks full of kid-friendly food every Friday, solely off donations, to make sure they have nutritious food over the weekend when subsidized food is not an option.

“We have 53 schools we partner with to make sure 1900 students have access to nutritional meals every weekend. There’s a need on a larger level to help, but unfortunately funds and food don’t go that far. This year we were able to add 600 students in three schools to our program. This is great progress, but the need for healthy meals in our community is far greater,” explained Manna Food Center’s Executive Director, Kim Damion.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

I recently watched the movie Snow White while babysitting for a friend’s daughter so she could get out.  The last time I had seen the movie was many years ago when I watched it with my kids.  As I have witnessed many times in the past couple of decades, the message of Positive Self Talk was loud and clear.

When the evil queen asked, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest one of all?” The mirror’s reply, “Snow White” made the evil Queen furious. You see, it wasn’t enough for the Queen that she was beautiful.  Instead, the Queen chose to see that she wasn’t enough. There was someone more beautiful than she.

Local Ice Cream Participating in Walmart's "Get On The Shelf " Campaign

Gaithersburg resident, Valerie Ross, has entered her southern style, hand-churned ice cream into Walmart’s “Get On The Shelf Program," a contest that discovers great products and small businesses. This program allows anyone up until April 4th to submit a product to be voted on by the public. The competition is tough with over 4,000 brands in the running. The top 10 products from the first round will go to the final round of voting, which takes place between April 11th and April 24th.

After being laid off in 2009, Ross created "BOSS Ice Cream" to pay for her daughter’s college tuition. This ice cream is based on a family recipe passed down through generations since the 1800’s.

This super premium ice cream produced in Gaithersburg “keeps it real,” as Ross says, with no preservatives or additives. It’s also an egg and gluten free product.

Attn NoVA/DC/MD High School Students + Parents :: Prom Confidence Event + Giveaway on March 24th

On Saturday, March 24, local merchants and activists for young people will come together to make some prom dreams come true for teenagers in Northern Virginia, D.C., and Maryland. The group previously hosted makeovers with local teens, including the one featured in the video above of Nailah Phillips, a sophomore at Heritage HIgh School in Leesburg. Perhaps the best part about these makeovers is that the team bases its prom and homecoming events not only on making over the outside, but on reminding teens first, to see and appreciate their strengths, and second, to know that each is truly special.
