Record AP Performance by 2010 MCPS Graduates
Half of 2010 graduates passed at least one AP Exam;
Paint Branch High singled out as an “exemplary” program

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) set a new record for Advanced Placement performance with half of its 2010 graduates earning a college-ready score on at least one AP Exam—nearly double the rate of the state of Maryland and triple the rate nationally.

More than 5,000 students from the MCPS class of 2010 received a score of 3 or higher on at least one AP Exam during their high school education—a success rate of exactly 50 percent. In Maryland, 26.4 percent of 2010 graduates received a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam, while nationally, the rate was 16.9 percent.

Local School-Wide Spelling Bee at Potomac Lighthouse Public Charter School

Washington D.C., – Potomac Lighthouse Public Charter School (PLPCS) is is participating in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, a program established to promote literacy and to help students throughout their lives, and sponsored in D.C. by The Washington Informer. PLPCS will hold the school-wide Spelling Bee on February 2 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. The School-Wide Spelling Bee will be comprised of 20 spellers from Grades 3-5. There will be a series of rounds in which students compete by orally spelling words. The top two spellers will advance to the Regional Cluster Competition with the opportunity to ultimately advance to the Citywide and National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

On February 7th from 5:30pm-9pm, the Patriots Technology Training Center will host its 2nd annual Bio Medical Competition at the U.S. National Library of Medicine, 8600 Rockville Pike, in Bethesda MD  20894.  Their goal is to encourage students to further their interest in various medical fields.  Please visit their website (www.patriots-ttc.org) to view the 2010 Bio-Medical Competition co-sponsored by The Library of Medicine.

Eight high school and one home school team will present a five-page research paper, brochure, slide show, one-page web site, display board, and an oral presentation on one of the medical careers listed below:

Montgomery County May Reconsider Charter Schools

The Maryland Board of Education has directed the Montgomery County school system to reconsider its decision to reject two charter school applications.

The state board found Tuesday that the Montgomery Board of Education failed to adequately explain why it turned down bids from Global Gardens Public Charter School and Crossway Community. It has give the local board 90 days to revisit its decision.

A Montgomery County schools spokesman says the local board will review the matter and "respond in a timely manner."

Montgomery is the largest school system in the state and does not have any independently operated charter schools.

Montgomery County Schools Closed

Montgomery County Public Schools are closed today due to emergency weather conditions. All school and community activities in school buildings also are canceled. All administrative offices are open. Day care programs in school buildings will remain open as scheduled.

Board of Education Discusses Superintendent Search; Adolescent Literacy

The Montgomery County Board of Education met on Tuesday, January 11, and, among other items, discussed an update on the search for a new superintendent, adolescent literacy, and a school safety and security report. The Board also approved the  appointment of a new administrator, approved plans for three school addition projects, and passed a resolution recognizing February as African American History Month.
