Your One Fashion Resolution for 2011

Your One Fashion Resolution for 2011

If you only have one fashion resolution for the New Year, let it be this: only buy things that make you feel fantastic. It may sound simplistic, but many times people purchase things that they are just "eh" about. Sometimes those purchases are made for very practical reasons - lack of time / money / energy, or it is just difficult to find clothing that fits correctly. But, one purchase that is just "okay" leads to more purchases that "will do"....and that leads to an entire closet of "meh" clothing. It's one of the reasons people can have an entire closet full of clothes, yet feel like they have nothing to wear.

New Year's Eve is a time to party, but it can also be a time of fashion frustration. If you are already stressing about what to wear on the last night of 2010, here are a few suggestions so you can ring in 2011 in style.

1. Oh, Betsey Johnson, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. The Evening Organza with Flowers Strapless Dress reminds me of a shorter version of Audrey Hepburn's black and white dress in Roman Holiday. A modern, flirty update on a classic dress.

Store: Betsey Johnson

Multiple Locations: 3029 M Street, NW (Georgetown); 1809 G International Drive (Tyson's); online

Price: $388.00 - get 40% off on the Betsey Johnson website for a limited time.

Attend the Red Carpet Premiere of Collide

Attend the Red Carpet Premiere of Collide

Collide, the new motion picture from DMV filmmaker Master June Daguiso, will premiere this Sunday at the Burke Theater. Collide is the latest action film from the Virginia resident and martial arts expert, who also stars. The movie tells the story of three criminals from different cultures whose paths inexorably cross in the U.S. Although an indie film, Collide has been three years in the making and was partially shot on location in El Salvador.

Collide will have its red carpet premiere this Sunday December 19 with showings at 11AM and 2PM. As of this writing, the 11AM showing is nearly sold out. Tickets are $15, but contact me for info on how to get in for half price.

Awesomely Bad Holiday Sweaters

Awesomely Bad Holiday Sweaters

The golden years of horrible holiday sweaters may be behind us. The 1980's were an excellent decade for tacky Christmas wear. Even in the 90's everyone and their mother (and grandmother) started sporting a holiday sweater the day after Thanksgiving - and it was considered cool. Alas, the holiday sweater has been relegated to hipsters and / or the ironic Holiday Sweater Party.

As a fashion consultant I'm very thankful that stores are carrying fewer Christmas cardigans each year. But, there is a part of me that is quite nostalgic for the joy a really bad sweater can bring. Thus, I recently searched for an awful sweater contender that is a) currently on the market b) displays the true spirit of the holidays in sweater form.

Oooh, did I hit gold.
